Cloud Cost Guide Part 8: Step 7 - Installing the Zabbix Monitoring System

Updated: Sep 19, 2023

Keeping a Close Eye on Your Infrastructure

Welcome back to our blog series on reducing cloud costs through a DevOps-Enabled, Automated IT Infrastructure. So far, we've covered steps including choosing a Dedicated Managed Server provider, installing a Virtualization Hypervisor, setting up a cluster of Hypervisors, securing your data center with the OPNsense Firewall, managing user access with FreeIPA, and managing your systems with Katello. Today, we're moving onto the seventh step – installing the Zabbix Monitoring System.

In any IT infrastructure, it's essential to keep a close eye on software performance and overall IT infrastructure health. From network utilization and CPU load to disk space consumption, you need to have real-time insights into your infrastructure's status. That's where Zabbix comes into play.

Zabbix is an enterprise-grade, open-source monitoring tool that keeps track of your software's performance and your overall IT infrastructure health. When it captures this data, Zabbix empowers you to identify potential performance bottlenecks. Its real-time graphing paints a picture of your infrastructure's current state.

When something goes awry, Zabbix is prepared with multiple alert systems. It can send notifications via email, SMS, or through an Android or iOS app. Its user interface is known for its flexibility and customizability, enabling you to craft your dashboard to highlight crucial infrastructure data. Not only does it allow you to design your own application monitoring metrics, but it also lets you set any action in response to specific event triggers.

By installing Zabbix, you'll be adding a crucial tool to your IT infrastructure that will help you keep an eye on your systems' performance, predict potential issues, and take proactive steps to resolve them before they impact your operations.

In our next blog post, we'll discuss Step 8 – setting up an OpenVPN server. This server will allow your users secure access to your data center infrastructure.

Remember, each step you take brings you closer to a more streamlined, cost-effective, and efficient IT infrastructure.
